DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth, and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and innovative technology to observe the planet.

Located on Point Loma in San Diego Bay, the six-acre MarFac campus serves as the logistical and technical support hub for Scripps's worldwide ocean research program. The administrative offices of our Ship Operations & Marine Technical Support are located at MarFac, along with machine shops, instrument repair and calibration facilities, scientific staging and short-term storage areas, shipping/receiving facilities and a host of other specialized capabilities that support Scripps ocean research around the globe.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

As a MarFac Security Guard, you will be responsible for the continuous foot patrol of the Nimitz Marine Facility, Marine Physical Laboratory, and research vessels, including ship's compartments, buildings, grounds, stairwells, walkways, quays, public, and staff areas. Your role includes preparing and submitting detailed written daily activity log and incident reports, securing all zones at closing, and ensuring the safety and security of the facility. Checking for facility maintenance problems and unlawful acts or infractions of Facility and/or University policies; reports problems immediately to the Port Captain or other Manager. Your role provides a high degree of public contact and community service, such as public information, giving directions and assistance, providing escorts and general crime prevention. You will work closely with campus, military, and harbor police in handling security incidents and incident follow-up tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven ability to handle a high degree of public contact responsibly and effectively. Ability to remain calm, take appropriate action, and maintain a professional and impartial stance in all safety, security, emergency, and/or disaster situations as encountered.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise proper discretion and confidentiality when dealing with law enforcement information, information about individuals, and other information obtained in the line of duty.

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and operate portable telephones, radios, and other communication devices appropriately and professionally. Demonstrated ability to work well and cooperatively with faculty and staff, emergency personnel, students, and the public.

  • Demonstrated written reporting skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Proven ability to record in writing information obtained during interviews and investigations. Knowledge of correct techniques to screen calls, provide messages, and track responses, both verbal and written.

  • Proficient ability to use personal computers, printers, and word processing.

  • Proven ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures. Ability to learn understand and follow policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of security for MarFac grounds and people in the buildings.

  • Strong communication skills for group activities including expressing ideas effectively, seeking and respecting the opinions of others, active listening, and willingness to share ideas; facilitation skills sufficient to participate in and lead discussions.

  • Able to operate a forklift and assist with handling mooring lines from vessels (acquired- with training).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the TSA.

  • This is a per diem position that will be utilized on an as-needed basis.

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,099 – $58,151 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.12 – $27.85

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
