Functions as a working supervisor overseeing the work performed by Building Security Guards who are providing basic building security for County facilities. Oversees shift during normal business hours, after hours, weekends and holidays. Assigns equipment and vehicles, schedules guards to posts and/or patrol routes. Provides control access in County facilities. Manages private security contracts. Performs a variety of administrative, skilled or technical tasks of a specialized nature. Security of employees and the public is a major element in the performance of duties assigned to this job classification.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the third in a series of three security-related job classifications with the Maintenance job family. This classification is distinguished from the Building Security Guard Sr with the addition of supervisory duties and responsibilities. This classification is distinguished in that incumbents are responsible for security of the employees and public visiting County buildings. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assigns duties to security crew members, maintains work schedules to ensure proper coverage for 24/7 coverage of all county buildings. inspects work for quality and explains needed improvements in performance. Conducts performance evaluations and any required disciplinary actions.
  • Provides on-the-job training for assigned crewmembers in proper security techniques and procedures.
  • Monitors private security contract and ensures compliance with guard availability and workstation coverage as required.
  • Operates radio and maintains contact with other posts. Monitors radio for routine and emergency transmissions. Monitors security cameras to track normal movement and identify security violations in all areas. Provides surveillance of activity.
  • Monitors and distributes security access cards as needed.
  • Ensures the monitoring of heating and air conditioning systems for proper operation during non- business hours. Ensures checks are performed within facilities for leaks during rainstorms. Ensures and receives all information regarding malfunctioning equipment and monitors buildings and properties for equipment failure or vandalism. Notifies proper emergency contacts for repairs as required.
  • Monitors routine building checks.
  • Review daily logs and report and addresses any situations that may require follow-up.
  • Documents any incident/accident/performance situations.
  • Assists in the hiring and promotion of new building security staff.
  • Attend training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.
  • Communicates with County department management, staff, and Parking vendors concerning parking issues or changes in Travis County parking management practice and/or policy. Addresses employee inquiries, alerts employees about changes in parking status, changes in parking areas, revised restrictions, and other parking-related information.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining parking-related policies, procedures and practices for effective management of parking operations.
  • Monitors County parking facilities through conducting audits and/or staff counts and enforces the County Parking Policy and other policies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. AND three (3) years of building security or related experience, with one (1) year in a lead or supervisor position.

Licenses, Registration, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Must pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance.
Applicants are required to successfully pass the background investigation, including fingerprint clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures and techniques used in operating security systems.
  • Policies, practices, procedures and methods of providing building security services.
  • Security surveillance systems operations and capabilities.
  • Principles and practices of supervising assigned staff.
  • Applicable safety practices and regulations.


Skill in:

  • Interacting positively with the public.
  • Coordinating the work activities of assigned staff.
  • Both verbal and written communication including conveying and following instructions.
  • Computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and a variety of software packages.
  • Business English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Record Keeping.


Ability to:

  • Recognize and report needed repairs, security risks and dangers.
  • Physically perform assigned security duties with alertness.
  • Be firm and use tact in enforcing regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with the public.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and the general public.
  • Manage time well and meet timelines.
  • Supervise the work of subordinates and instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.
  • Provide training classes as required and needed.
  • Understand and follow instructions and to communicate effectively with subordinates, public and others.

Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions. Subject to extreme temperatures, outside elements, and extensive walking.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm. Hours may vary depending on county needs.
Works some holidays, Works some nights, Works some weekends.
