Job Summary:
The Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for
patients, staff, and visitors at a mental health facility. This role involves monitoring
the premises, enforcing security protocols, responding to emergencies, and ensuring
compliance with health and safety regulations. The Security Officer must demonstrate
professionalism, remain calm under pressure, and provide a supportive presence
within the facility.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor and patrol all areas of the facility, ensuring the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
Ensure security of building entrances, exits, and sensitive areas.
Respond to incidents, disturbances, or emergency situations, including medical emergencies
or potential security threats, while ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
Observe and report suspicious activities or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
Enforce facility policies and procedures in a professional and non-confrontational manner.
Collaborate with healthcare staff, emergency responders, and management to address
safety concerns.
Assist in de-escalating tense situations, using conflict resolution skills to prevent aggression
or violence.
Conduct regular checks on security equipment, such as alarms, surveillance cameras, and fire
safety devices.
Complete incident reports and logs in a timely and accurate manner.
Ensure confidentiality of patient and facility information at all times.
Follow procedures to handle security breaches, threats, or unauthorized access to restricted
areas.
Provide assistance with visitor check-in, ensuring proper identification and visitor guidelines
are followed.
Support staff in the safe transportation of patients, if necessary.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; further education or certifications in security,
law enforcement, or mental health-related fields preferred.
Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a healthcare setting preferred.
Knowledge of mental health conditions and the ability to remain calm and professional in
challenging situations.
Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with diverse
populations.
Ability to handle stressful situations and make decisions quickly and effectively.
Basic knowledge of emergency response procedures and first aid.
Ability to use security equipment, including surveillance cameras and alarm systems.
Valid security officer certification or license (if required by local regulation).
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
Must be able to lift and carry objects as necessary (up to 50 pounds).
Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and remain alert throughout shifts.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily indoors, but may require occasional outdoor patrols.
Potential exposure to emotionally challenging situations or patients with mental health
issues.
May work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
